Hello and Welcome

The Old Town Hypnotherapy blog will aims to provide you with  useful tips to help enhance your life in a positive way.

We could all do with reminders now and then to focus on the positive things in our life, because we all do have lots of positive things happening every day – honestly!  However, if you’ve been under a lot of stress, experiencing anxiety or depression there is a tendency to focus on what’s wrong, the problems and what needs changing, so those little positive things get lost in everyday issues.

For some, those positive things may be as basic and simple as ‘I actually got out of bed and got dressed yesterday and today’ (I hear that a lot in clinic), or it might be “I’m healthy” or “my children love me”, but the 1st step in making positive changes in your life is to reflect on the positive things you already have, not the negative.

“That doesn’t make sense?” I hear you cry! “How does that work then?”

Well, when we worry and focus on the negative things in our lives, past or future, we create anxiety.  That anxiety produces stress hormones such as Adrenalin which tips off our original primitive brain (concerned with self preservation), that our life is in some sort of crisis or emergency.  At that, the primitive brain steps in and takes control and this primitive brain will always look at the worst possible scenario, is always negative and self centered because it’s about keeping you safe.  What’s more, the primitive mind always works within the parameters of anxiety, depression and anger, or a combination of all three (caught yourself being a worrying, stroppy misery-guts recent?)

If we focus on the positive things in our life, we can start to switch back to our intellectual mind (the clever bit) which can then focus on solutions for making positive changes and work out how to do it rather than wallowing in the self pity of what’s wrong.

Make sense?  If you think positively, then you will operate from your intellect which can solve those problems.

Try it now – think of at least 10 positive things in your life and see how much better you feel.

I would love to stay in touch with you by email, but don’t worry, I won’t bombard you.
